Luís Castro is a Portuguese football coach born on 17th October 1961,
in the city of Vila Real. He began his coaching career at the age of 26,
taking charge of a number of small clubs in Portugal before moving
on to bigger teams. Currently is a Football Manager.
During is footballer career started a major in Physics at the University
of Coimbra. Castro was appointed at FC Penafiel in the top level in 2004,
after starting in the lower leagues. In 2006 was appointed as FC Porto
Academy Technical Director, working directly with Vitor Frade using
the basis of Tactical Periodization on the development of the FC Porto
style of play and youth players development.
After 7 years in this role Castro was appointed FC Porto “B” Manager
and FC Porto (First Team) Manager during the 2013/14 Season.
From 2014 – 2017 he was FC Porto “B” Manager and have won the
Portuguese National 2nd League (for the first time in the Portuguese
history one “B” team won a professional league).
Left FC Porto in 2016/17 to join Rio Ave FC (1st League) and in 2017/18
led GD Chaves to a club record in the 1st League (47 points).
After he finish is job at Vitória de Guimarães (qualification for Europa
League) he Joined FC Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine where attained
the Ukrainian Title with a record of advantage points to the second place
(+23) and qualified Shakhtar for UEFA Europa League Semi Finals 2019/20).
He also won 2 times against Real Madrid for the UEFA Champions League
group stage (first time in history of Shakhtar).
Luís Castro won the Qatar Emir Cup with Al-Duhail in 2022. The Emir Cup
is one of the most prestigious football competitions in Qatar and winning
it was a significant achievement for Luís Castro and his team.
Luís Castro took over Botafogo, one of Brazil’s historic clubs,
in 2022 and was responsible for the Brasileirão’s second best start
of all time, the following year. In 2023/24 he moved to Al Nassr,
where he won the Arab Clubs Champions Cup, ending 2023 as the coach
with the most victories in the world (52).
Known for his tactical knowledge and ability to develop young players,
Castro has earned a reputation as one of the top coaches in Portugal
and Europe. He has been praised for his ability to adapt to different
playing styles and his focus on creating a strong team culture.
